{"id":43,"date":"2021-03-14T14:57:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-14T14:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/2021mobilemining.praxisucc.ie\/blog\/?page_id=43"},"modified":"2021-05-18T14:13:11","modified_gmt":"2021-05-18T14:13:11","slug":"sustainable-development","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/2021mobilemining.praxisucc.ie\/blog\/sustainable-development\/","title":{"rendered":"Sustainable Development"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Generally defined as \u2018meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some have defined sustainable development by the balancing of three concepts or pillars: economic viability, environmental protection and social equality (fig 1). A more comprehensive concept centers around the 5 Ps: people, planet, prosperity, peace and partnership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"592\" src=\"http:\/\/2021mobilemining.praxisucc.ie\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Concept-of-SD.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54\" srcset=\"https:\/\/2021mobilemining.praxisucc.ie\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Concept-of-SD.jpg 600w, https:\/\/2021mobilemining.praxisucc.ie\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Concept-of-SD-300x296.jpg 300w, https:\/\/2021mobilemining.praxisucc.ie\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Concept-of-SD-274x270.jpg 274w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption>Fig. 1<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>Sustainable Development Goals<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Developed by the UN in 2015 as a framework for the world to develop sustainable policies and agendas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the SDGs that relate to our project:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Primarily SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production but also SDG8: Decent Work &amp; Economic Growth, SDG13 Climate Action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>Limitations of SDGs<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One limitation is that they aren\u2019t legally binding and rely on individual countries to monitor and report their progress in achieving the goals. It\u2019s also hard to see how the SDGs can succeed without addressing the economic system which underpins our society i.e. Neoliberalism.\u00a0 Some tenets of neoliberalism are: unfettered economic growth, privatisation of services and utilities, citizens\/ people become consumers, tax cuts for the rich and a reduction in the role of the state. The pursuit of unhindered growth is fueling our overconsumption and has led to catastrophic effects on the environment and communities. A new economic model called \u2018Doughnut Economics\u2019, challenges this idea of growth.
